Northwestern College A Cappella Choir - March 4, 2008 - 7:30 PM |
Wyckoff Reformed Church will host the A cappella Choir of Northwestern College, Orange City, Iowa, on Tuesday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free, and community members are invited.
The ensemble’s three-part concert will begin with songs focusing on submission to Christ’s Lordship, followed by virtuosic and humorous selections, and close with spirituals.
The first part of the concert will include drama and readers’ theatre as vocalists perform pieces like “The Conversion of Saul” and arrangements of “Abide With Me” and “Give Me Jesus.”
Part two features the Heritage Singers chamber choir performing numbers like “Flight of the Bumblebee” and “Tell My Ma.” Section two concludes with an all-male rendition of “America the Beautiful.”
The third part of the concert includes “Ain’t No Grave Can Hold My Body Down” and the choir’s traditional “Beautiful Savior.” Audience members who are alumni of Northwestern’s A cappella Choir will be invited to join the ensemble on the familiar hymn.
Northwestern’s A cappella Choir is directed by Dr. Thomas Holm, who also teaches music at the college and conducts the Sioux County Oratorio Chorus. The 60-voice mixed ensemble has performed across the United States and in Eastern Europe.
Northwestern is a Christian college of 1,300 students. Rated a top-10 Midwestern comprehensive college by U.S. News & World Report magazine, Northwestern provides an education that combines academic rigor with a faith perspective.

Since the start of the year 2000 more than 2
million jobs disappeared in this country. People who used to provided for
themselves are now unable to fulfill their family's most basic needs. What began as a small effort to help feed a few
disadvantaged families in and around Paterson has now become one of the larger
food banks in our area. Each month the efforts of our very loyal volunteers provide supplemental food for
600+ individuals in 160 families.

Any effort of this size and scope needs
people of all skills. One important and immediate task is a continuous need for volunteers to help
off-load supplies each month as they come in from the Food Bank in Hillside.

No matter what your skills there is a job for you available right here: grant writing, food
packing, record keeping, etc. Of course donations are
always welcome, just make a check out to WRC-Northside Food Pantry and send it
to the Church.

At about
9:00 am on the third Saturday of each month a crew gathers in the kitchen in
the education building to begin preparation of a meal. The fellowship
belies the need as the happy crew peels and bakes a full dinner for 100 homeless walk-in recipients.
Then at about 2:15 pm these volunteers take the food to a shelter in Hackensack and
helps serve those in need. Our effort is
part of Inter-Religious Fellowship program. A wonderful time for hands-on
mission work and Christian fellowship.

Join our 8th annual “Lace-up for Habitat” Walk-a-thon on April 5th, 2008
You can help provide affordable housing for deserving families by participating in this year’s
“Lace-up for Habitat” walk-a-thon to benefit Paterson Habitat for Humanity. Previous walks have raised a
total of $150,000.
The 7-mile walk begins at our church at 8:00 a.m. and ends at the Habitat office in
Paterson. Needed are walkers, sponsors, drivers, rest stop volunteers, and cookie bakers.
There will be two rest stops along the way. Walkers will be returned to the church by car. Walkers
are asked to bring a bag lunch.
This year sponsors can donate “online” directly to Paterson Habitat for Humanity. Go to the web site http://www.patersonhabitat.org and hit “donate” then choose “amount.” Under the designation write in WRC
which indicates that the contribution came from someone affiliated with the Wyckoff Reformed Church
walk-a-thon.

The Mission Trip to Tennessee
went very well. 49 young adults dedicated a week of their summer (iincluding
July 4th weekend) to help needy families in the hills of Tennessee. They
spent their time building and repairing homes...
building and repairing faith, theirs own and those they touch.

Planning has already begun for 2008!
